I think some of the issues that have been in the news lately (20 somethings not leaving home home etc) can be traced to an underlying fear of the unknown. Kids do need to be on their own to figure out some tactical thinking and get themselves in/out of trouble. Those experiences shape us as adults to be self-reliant and bold in approaching our life.
In my experience, you have to learn problem-solving on your own. Yes, advice and support matter but I remind of the saying “Good judgement comes from experience and experience comes from bad judgement.”
